The distribution of Cycas baiseensis and Cycas debaoensis is discussed, and the conservation efforts and the taxonomic issues for these two rare cycads are evaluated and discussed.
Cycas debaoensis, described in 1997 (Zhong and Chen, 1997) is known from a small number of individuals, and the species retains characters thought to be perhaps the most primitive among Cycadopsida (Huang, 2001). Thus, more scholars carried out basic studies on the situation of the habitat of Cycas debaoensis in Fuping, Debao (Wei et al., 2006; Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2008; Wang et al., 2011), the characteristics of population ecology in 2003 (Ma et al., 2003), the status in other distribution sites and the number of individuals in Napo (Pan, 2008; Li & Peng, 2009; Pan and Zhao, 2011), and the anatomical studies of stem and leaves (Wen et al., 2005; Xie and Liu, 2012). Cycas gracilis was published in 2008 (Huang et al., 2008). The two species distribution ranges are highly restricted, and the studies discern differences between the two species in habitat, environment, and biogeography, and reports on the study of these two species in conservation biology and taxonomy are few. The habitat changes and present circumstances are without report. Nevertheless, these shall be important reference value and promote effect to study of their habitats, population sizes, conservation strategy, and interactions with local populations and for the formulation of conservation plans. The paper shall attempt to address some of these deficits.
