You asked for them and now they're here! NYBG Press is happy to announce the availability of Wonders in the Garden!, a 3-book set of children's books that includes What Grows in the Garden?, What Lives in the Garden?, What Do You Sense in the Garden?, by Anne Mottola and illustrated by Maria Mottola. Each book explores the spirit of gardening by featuring children in a community garden setting either in school, their community, or their home neighborhood. According to the author and illustrator, "Our hope is that each book will instill a love of gardening in children who read them and inspire them to be caretakers of the environment." Each book is beautifully illustrated with full-color illustrations intended for children ages 4 to 8 and older. The set will make a great birthday or holiday gift for your future gardener or botanist!
This series helps children gain a thorough understanding for the importance of our environment and gardens. The books are quick and easy reads, that offer an excellent way for kids to grasp the subject matter as it relates to gardens. They really drive home the message and encourage children to think about the concepts without being overwhelmed with information. The books introduce new concepts/items/ideas (i.e., vegetables, habitats, senses) in a fun and catchy way using straight-forward, repetitive questions and aesthetically pleasing, specific illustrations to engage the reader and help to easily explain the materials. Important information is simply and directly stated and broken down into categories that allow children to follow along comfortably, predict the story line and focus on the content (rather then get caught up in the words). For young children, this makes it easy to become familiar with the books and increases the likelihood they will read them again. Little readers are sure to be excited about getting into the garden to continue learning!
Anne Mottola was born and raised on Long Island, NY. Anne started gardening as a child, alongside her father who grew up on a farm and worked most of his life as a teacher. Anne graduated with a BA in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Virginia and a master's degree in Social Work from Fordham University's School of Social Welfare. Anne's professional career began with twelve years working in child-oriented social service agencies. Anne is currently an instructor for the Edible Academy at The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, an instructor for Kaleidoscope Garden Design, LLC in Westchester, NY, and the lead garden instructor for the school garden she created and maintains at Osborn Elementary School in Rye, NY. Anne is a freelance graphic designer, a tutor to elementary age children, and a very proud mom to her 16-year old daughter. In June of 2014, Anne earned her Gardening Certificate at The New York Botanical Garden. Anne enjoys most fruits and vegetables, in particular, snap peas and granny smith apples and thinks kohlrabi is the coolest one to grow. Anne is thrilled to have fulfilled a dream of hers - creating a children's book with her sister Mia. Anne Mottola's Author Page
