Although Eriosema is essentially pantropical in distribution, it occurs in three widely separated areas: American, Africa (including Madagascar), and Southeast Asia and northern Australia. All species of Eriosema are typically savanna plants, their distribution being obviously associated with a seasonal pattern of rainfall. This revision of the American species of Eriosema recognizes 45 taxa comprising 38 species and 7 varieties. Includes keys, descriptions, distribution maps, and black and white illustrations.
John Wesley Grear (1937-1980? ) was a Graduate student of Howard Irwin at The New York Botanical Garden/Columbia University; and he received a Ph.D. in 1968 for his revision of Eriosema. He became Associate Professor and Curator, Department of Botany, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. He left academia and moved to San Francisco in the mid-1970s and passed-on in the 1980's.
