Ronald A. Pursell (December 7, 1930 - March 17, 2014} was born on in the Village of Upper Black Eddy, located on the western shore of the Delaware River in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Following graduation from high school in 1948, he matriculated at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park. majoring in Botany and was awarded a B.S. (1952) and an M.S.(1954). His Ph.D. in Botany was awarded in 1957 by Florida State University, Tallahassee. During his formative years in Florida. he gained two life-long friends and colleagues. Paul L. Redfearn and William D. Reese. His first two academic appointments were at University of Colorado, Boulder (1957-1958) and University of Tennessee, Knoxville (1958-1959). In 1959 he returned to The Pennsylvania State University, rising through the academic ranks, Instructor (1959-1963). Assistant Professor (1963-1968), Associate Professor (1968 -1977). and Professor (1977-1991). He retired from formal academic activities in December 1991. He served The American Bryological and Lichenological Society as: Director of the Moss Exchange (1960-1974): Vice-President (1973-1975): and, President (1975-1977). During his tenure with The Pennsylvania State University, he was major professor for Bruce Allen (M.S.1978). Robert E. Hattaway (Ph. D., 1973). Shan-busing Lin (Ph. D.. 1982), Monte G. Manuel (Ph.D.. 1976), Eric Randall (Ph.D.. 1973). and Lloyd Stark (Ph.D.. 1985). In December 1988 he was invited by the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands to be an examiner for the Ph.D. of Maria Alida Bruggeman-Nannenga. In 1988 he was appointed as a Research Associate of the Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis. He has collected bryophytes in many areasof North America and has participated in bryological collecting trips to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Suriname, the Canary Islands, and The Netherlands. His research interests are primarily the Fissidentaceae, but also the Bryoxiphiaceae, Erpodiaceae, Eustichiaceae, Phyllodrepanaceae, Phyllogoniaceae, Splachnobr
